What Age Should My Dog Be For A Board And Train?
What’s too old and what’s too young
Board and Train programs are one of the most efficient ways to build reliable obedience in dogs—but when’s the best time to start? Many owners ask us whether their dog is old enough (or too old), how long the training takes, and when to send their pup to get the best results.
Let’s break it all down so you can feel confident about the timing.

What age should a dog go to a board and train?
Dogs can begin a board and train program as early as 12 weeks old, especially when enrolled in a puppy-specific training program. The veterinarians we have consulted recommend completing three rounds of core vaccinations, which typically line up around 12 weeks of age.
When it comes to puppy board and train, the most critical factor is the style of training being used. At this sensitive developmental stage, training should be centered around reward-based techniques, shaping behaviors through positive reinforcement, and counter-conditioning any undesirable behaviors. The goal is to use the absolute least amount of pressure possible—training should be fun and confidence-building.
As a puppy matures, more advanced obedience skills and early accountability can begin around 5 to 6 months of age, depending on the individual dog’s temperament and readiness.
Adolescents and adult dogs are ideal candidates for standard board and train programs. In fact, the adolescent stage (6–24 months) is one of the most transformative windows—when dogs are full of energy, pushing boundaries, and desperately need consistent guidance. This is when we see some of the best long-term results.
And don’t worry—it’s never too late. Even older dogs can thrive with immersive, professional training when the program is tailored to their needs and personality. The saying old dogs can’t learn new tricks is a myth!

When should you start training a dog?
How long does a board and train take?
Most dogs stay in our board and train program for 10 days – 3 weeks, depending on your goals, your dog’s age and temperament, and how much foundational work they’ve already had.
For example:
-
Puppies are little sponges that can learn new skills quickly and are limited on how advanced they can learn. Because of this, puppy board and trains can span from 1-2 weeks.
-
Young or untrained dogs often benefit from a 2–3 week stay for solid reliability.
-
Dogs who already know basic commands may succeed with 2 weeks of polishing and real-world proofing.
Each day is structured with training sessions, rest periods, and controlled exposure to distractions like parks, stores, and other dogs. Repetition, consistency, and timing are what make the difference—and that’s exactly what our trainers deliver.
When is the best time to send your dog to a board and train?
The best time is when you’re ready to follow through on the results.
Board and Train provides the foundation, but your dog’s progress will only last if you’re prepared to reinforce the training at home. We make this easy by offering lifetime follow-up lessons, so your dog’s training doesn’t stop when they come home.
That said, many owners schedule board and train:
-
Before a big life change (a move, new baby, etc.)
-
We often have owners overlap their dog’s board and train with their vacation
-
Right after the puppy stage ends and behaviors escalate
-
During busy seasons when daily training at home isn’t realistic
- Some owners arrange training before their puppy even arrives to their new home!
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, like your dog needs a clean reset, or want to set your new puppy up for success, now is a great time.
what happens if my dog doesn’t listen after a board and train?
It’s not uncommon for dogs to test boundaries once they return home—they’re transitioning from working with a professional trainer back to everyday life with you. This doesn’t mean the training didn’t work, it means your dog needs consistency and follow-through in their new environment.
That’s why at OverWatch K9 Academy we include go-home lessons and lifetime follow-up support with every board and train. We don’t just train your dog—we coach you too, so you know exactly how to reinforce the training and maintain results.
If your dog isn’t responding as expected, we’ll walk you through:
-
Re-establishing structure and clarity at home
-
Fine-tuning your timing and handling
-
Using the right motivators or tools based on your dog’s personality
With just a bit of guidance and tweaking, dogs snap right back into working mode. They never forget what they learned!
